The Top 3 To-Do’s Before Going to the Studio

You’ve decided to release your music into the world. But this time around, you aren’t just singing for your grandmother in her living room because she wanted to know how middle school choir was going. No, it’s finally time to professionally record an original piece of music that you can call your own.

How can you be certain you are prepared to be in a professional studio? After all, it can be expensive, so you don’t want to show up flat-footed. Here are three general rules of thumb that you need to follow before showing up to the studio:

1.     Have at least 80% of the song done

In general, you can tie up loose ends once you get to the studio. But don’t start from the absolute ground floor on a project (unless, of course, you’re being funded by a major label). Come prepared with a large majority of the song completely written out, or at least tentatively mapped out.

2.     Be excited about your music

You’ve done it, you’re here, and no one can stop you. So get excited for what you have! That may sound silly, but professionally recording is a big move to make. Make sure that the music you bring is something you genuinely care about. Show up with songs that really showcase your passion and heart.

3.     Think about your end result

Who are you? What’s your sound? Bringing in examples of artists and styles can help your engineers and producers find the sounds you want. You wrote these songs, so help the studio bring them to life—after all, that’s what you’re paying them for!
