3 Proven Ways To Ruin Your Recording Before Even Releasing It

When you go in to record, you may think to yourself, “How can I obliterate this recording today? I mean, really just put terrible music into the world.” Well, if you’ve ever wondered how to achieve the bare minimum from your artistic talent, here are some good tips to help you out:

  1. Don’t get a partner in the process. It’s easy to think we’re the exception instead of the rule. I’m the world's worst about this. I tend to think optimistically about things and that’s led me to make some mistakes with my music early on. I would often write, record, and mix by myself. And the results really reflected it-- It wasn’t great. But when I’d partner and invest with others, it was always so much better! Find a partner for your music.

  2. Put all your good ideas down instead of your best ideas. You might take a lesson from pop music here. Listen to 70% of pop songs and the arrangement is streakily simple. Usually consisting of a beat, some type of pad, a lead, and one loop, synth, or guitar pulling the song along. Nothing groundbreaking. But how does it sound so interesting? They’ve chosen the best ideas. It’s easy to want to throw all of your ideas on the table, and in fact you need to do that. To make a great recording, though, you really need to pick the one or two best ideas.

  3. Record on less than stellar equipment. In the age of $100 home recording studios, it can be easy to say that equipment doesn’t matter. But it truly does. Professional recording studio equipment really does impact the way your final recording sounds. While your voice or playing are surely stellar, hearing your voice through a $6,000 microphone is really an experience of a lifetime.
